Deep Forest

In the early ’90s, Frenchmen Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet wrote the book on ethno-tribal electronica. Their innovative fusion of African Pygmy voices with state-of-the-art rhythms on the smash hit “Sweet Lullaby” remains one of electronica’s defining tracks.

The project came about when Sanchez, an avid student of ethnic music, decided to try to combine African voices in a modern pop context. Sanchez, who was friends with Mouquet already then for several years, gave him a listen. The idea interested Mouquet a lot and the two began making music. Mouquet, who had previously composed and arranged mainly music with synthesizers, gave the music its ambient dance sound.

Despite the explosion of like-minded acts and the fact that their musical experimentation is now firmly ensconced in electronica, Deep Forest have shown a determination to continue innovating.
